A door opens for FC Bayern in the search for a coach: Roberto De Zerbi is leaving Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer. The Seagulls announced this one day before the last Premier League game against Manchester United (5 p.m.).
“We have mutually agreed to terminate Roberto’s contract at a mutually convenient time, so that we have the earliest possible opportunity to plan next season and Roberto has enough time to think about his next step and his future,” explained Club boss Tony Bloom.
“I am very sad to be leaving Brighton but I am very proud of what my players and team have achieved with the support of everyone at the club and our great fans over the last two historic seasons. “We have agreed to end my time at Brighton so that the club and I can continue to work in the way that best suits each of us, following our own ideas and visions, our work and our human values,” said De Zerbi, who recently committed to Brighton and ruled out leaving. The Italian has been linked to FC Bayern for weeks.
Update 7:22 p.m.: “That shows how crazy the whole coaching search is. (…) It was said that it was him, then he committed to Brighton. Roberto De Zerbi did a great job at Brighton. That means nothing to us,” Bayern sports director Max Eberl told “ARD” after the defeat at TSG Hoffenheim. When asked on “ZDF” whether he could vehemently object to the new coach being an Italian, the 50-year-old answered “yes”. When asked specifically about De Zerbi and Massimiliano Allegri, who was fired from Juventus, Eberl replied: “The question was and I gave an answer.”
“If you ask me whether there is any club that can change my mind: No, there isn’t one. “I would like to stay at Brighton to achieve the highest possible goal every season,” the 44-year-old De Zerbi was recently quoted by “The Athletic”. But first the season must be analyzed with the club bosses. That has now apparently happened. De Zerbi led the Seagulls into the Europa League last season, but the club is only in tenth place in the Premier League before the last matchday after recent mixed performances. The Europa League ended in the round of 16. Thomas Frank from Brentford FC is said to be the top candidate to replace De Zerbi. Regarding the transfer rumors surrounding him, De Zerbi recently said: “When I say that there is no club that can change my idea, then I have always been honest, there is no club that stands behind me.”
