HSV beats 1. FC Magdeburg and stays close to St. Pauli in the 2nd Bundesliga

Hamburger SV has maintained its home reputation in the second Bundesliga and is now the first pursuer of city rivals and league leaders FC St. Pauli. With a hard-earned 2-0 (1-0) against 1. FC Magdeburg, who had been equal for a long time, HSV overtook Fortuna Düsseldorf in the rankings and is second again. For coach Tim Walter’s team it was the sixth success in the sixth game this season at the local Volkspark.

Laszlo Benes (9th) gave the hosts an early lead in front of 56,800 spectators. Bakery Jatta (72nd) headed the final score. In the 78th minute, Daniel Elfadli, of all people, was shown the red card after a serious foul. The Hamburg team had been trying for the Magdeburg defensive man for a long time in the summer.

The guests, who had now been winless for seven games, had their first dangerous goal area scene after a few seconds. After that, the people of Hamburg dominated the action. In the eighth minute, striker Robert Glatzel narrowly missed the goal. A minute later, Benes completed an outstanding combination to score his seventh goal of the season.

The Magdeburgers didn’t let the early deficit deter them. The lively Baris Atik and Jason Ceka in particular kept the HSV defense busy. But Hamburg’s defense was mostly secure. Fans in the Magdeburg spectator block provided a short break in the first half by setting off several rockets. Referee Florian Exner interrupted the game in the 25th minute. Two minutes later it started again.

The game was evenly balanced for a long time in the second half. Former HSV coach Christian Titz’s visiting team didn’t give up and initially repeatedly found themselves in promising positions. The people of Hamburg had a hard time. Coach Walter reacted and brought in Lukasz Poreba and Jean-Luc Dompé. They livened up their team’s game. It was Dompe who gave the cross to Jatta’s header goal. The guests’ resistance was broken at the latest with the red card for Elfadli.
