Quiñones Vázquez, delivered 26 vehicles to DRD personnel, after an investment of $765 thousand from American Rescue funds Plan Act (ARPA). This becomes the first fleet of new cars delivered to the DRD since 2006.

“My administration has a great commitment to the sports and recreational development of the Island. Beyond competitive sports, it is important that our communities are part of the development of recreational activities that incorporate elements in favor of physical and mental health, coexistence in society, and individual and collective emotional connection. Today we are here to deliver a new fleet of vehicles for all DRD regions. In addition, we are delivering new sports equipment and materials to all regions for the sports of Archery, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, Pickelball, Basketball, Badminton and recreational games. These materials will help them serve more than 1,000 boys and girls from public and residential schools, as well as over 500 older adults in senior and long-term care centers,” said the first executive, who explained that the sports equipment delivered was purchased with DRD’s own funds.

The vehicles delivered are 17 RAM 1,500 buses, two RAM 2,500 buses, four Hyundai Elantra, one Toyota Rav4, one Sienna and one Ram Cargo.

For his part, the DRD secretary expressed that “we have to stay at the forefront and provide our public servants with the necessary tools to fully fulfill their mission of working for Puerto Rico. One of my first concerns upon arriving at the DRD was the lack of vehicles, because this limited, in part, our ability to carry our services around the entire Island. The nine regions had damaged, old or simply non-existent cars. Thanks to the help of Governor Pedro Pierluisi, we obtained an allocation of funds to acquire this fleet so that the regions are now ready for the game.”

During the activity, the governor highlighted the initiatives that have been implemented in the DRD in favor of sports and recreational development around the Island, such as the Sports Training Centers and summer camps, and his initiatives together with the Departments of Education. and Family that have impacted more than 150 thousand boys, girls and young people throughout Puerto Rico. Likewise, he highlighted the “Sports without Violence” campaign, an important effort to promote tolerance and respect in recreational activities, which is very relevant at a time when his administration is developing a Comprehensive Plan for Social Reconstruction and the Prevention of Violence. In addition, he recognized the work of digitizing the department’s registration and licensing services, in line with the public policy of government efficiency.

The chief executive took advantage of the occasion to recognize the senior volleyball team of Colegio Sagrado Corazón de Ponce, champions of the DRD School Sports Program Volleyball Tournament, who will travel to Virginia in the month of January to participate in the AAU Blizzar Blast Tournament Grand Prix 2024, along with other public and private school teams.

“You, more than anyone, witness how sports activities impact their participants, teaching discipline, promoting teamwork and developing life skills. Likewise, recreation nourishes the soul, reduces stress, promotes health and creates unparalleled opportunities for social compatibility. That is the goal and that is what we want for all our people,” Pierluisi concluded.
