Saudi Arabia is increasingly investing its billions in sport. Now you could also get into handball. The heads of the German Bundesliga are closely monitoring developments in their sport.

Will big money soon also come to handball? The German Bundesliga (HBL) is expecting major investments from Saudi Arabia in the sport of handball in the future. “If you now apply for a handball world championship, then you have to expect that they will also set up a corresponding league,” said HBL President Uwe Schwenker on Tuesday to the internet portal handball-world. “I’m not looking at it with concern, but I’m already watching how things are developing in Saudi Arabia.”

Saudi Arabia is currently investing more, especially in football. Recently, a number of top international stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mané and Karim Benzema moved to Saudi Arabia. It also recently became known that the desert state is interested in hosting the Handball World Cup in 2029 or 2031. Now the HBL bosses believe that investments could possibly be made in upgrading the domestic handball league in the future.

“I think Saudi Arabia wants to do a lot in handball,” said HBL managing director Frank Bohmann at handball-world. “Money really doesn’t play a role at all.” For this reason, Schwenker expects that some of the best players in the Bundesliga could soon move to Saudi Arabia.

“They’re trying to get something going. Anything is conceivable,” said Schwenker. “They may then also target some of our players. We have a large number of top international players playing for us. I don’t want to talk it up, but it’s not unlikely.”
