The second day of the Iberdrola Spanish International, with matches still in play at press time, this Tuesday in Ibiza left a plethora of victories for the Spaniards in the men’s individual box. And, to the solid victory of Ernesto Baschwitz over the third favorite, the Maltese Matthew Abela (21-15 and 21-17), Alberto Perals joined him, who did not allow himself to be overcome by the Swede Richard Kuhl (21-17, 16 -21 and 21-13). Special mention deserves Álvaro Vázquez and Álvaro Leal, who emptied themselves on the court to advance and overcome their matches. On the one hand, Vázquez achieved a victory of merit and after a heart-stopping finish against the Indian Saneeth Shimoga (21-6, 16-21 and 22-20), while Leal starred in one of the most exciting matches of the championship, coming back shooting epic against the Austrian Kai Niederhuber (16-21, 24-22 and 23-21).

The results were also positive in the women’s individual draw, as Nikol Carulla and Nerea Ivorra managed to move forward. The first continued the good feelings shown in the previous and defeated the French Marie Cesari (21-13, 16-21 and 21-16), while Ivorra accounted for the Cypriot Nadezhda Nazarenko (21-7 and 21- 8). In this test, luck was not on the side of Amaia Torralba, who had just had good performances in the previous round, but she fell with her head held high against the Danish Sofie Karmann (21-18 and 21-13).

Presence in doubles

In men’s doubles, the main favorites, Rubén García and Carlos Piris, did not fail in their debut and solved it by beating the Swiss Hugo Chanthakesone and Liano Panza (21-12 and 21-13). The duos of Fran Olviares and Jaume Pérez also defeated the Dutch Andy Buijk and Casper Spaans (21-12 and 21-9).

In the women’s doubles things did not go so well, but it is worth noting that three of the five pairs that participated are still ahead in the competition. And to these we must add the couple of Paula López and Lucía Rodríguez who, by starting as first seeds, enter directly into the round of 16.

Regarding the duels this Tuesday, the tandem of Amaia Torralba and Jana Villanueva defeated the Italian Anna de March and Emma Piccinin (21-18, 10-21 and 21-18); Beatriz Corrales and Elena Lorenzo came back against Martina Corsini and Kirsten de Wit (17-21, 21-15 and 21-19) and Nerea Ivorra and Claudia Leal defeated the Danish Anne and Rikke Madsen (21-18, 18-21 and 21 -eleven). Along the way were Myriam Alonso and Sonia Martínez, who lost to the Dutch Diede Odijk and Iris van Leijsen (21-11 and 21-9), and Ana Caballero and Elena Payá, who could not beat the Finns Sarah Asfar and Oona Tapola (21-19, 14-21 and 22-20).

Things did go smoothly for the Spanish mixed couples, since only one of the seven couples with national representatives was left out of the round of 16: Jacobo Fernándesz and Paula López beat Natan Begga and Lilou Schaffner (21- 12 and 21-12), Rubén García and Lucía Rodríguez did the same against Colin Siellet and Charlotte Ganci (21-7 and 21-13), Carlos Piris and Carmen Jiménez knocked down David Salutt and Martina Corsini (24-22 and 23- 21), Jaume Pérez and Claudia Leal defeated Timmo Stoffelen and Meerte Loos (21-17 and 21-14), Fran Olviares and Elena Lorenzo defeated Mike Vestergaard and Anne Madsen (21-13 and 21-12) and finally the The pair formed by Bea Corrales and the Swiss Niklas Kramer came back from Adolfo López and Amaia Torralba (21-23, 21-18 and 21-15), the only Spanish pair that was left out.

The competition continues this Wednesday starting at 9:00 a.m. with the round of 16 matches and, after them, play will continue until the semi-finalists of the competition are known.

The semifinals will be held on Thursday, also at 9:00 a.m., and later the duels will be played for the titles that will crown the champions of this edition.
