Even back then, the right-footer, who trained at Birmigham City, was considered one of the most promising talents in the United Kingdom. “When I was manager at Chelsea I really wanted to sign him. Jim Fraser from the academy kept showing it to me and I was absolutely blown away. He was 17 at the time!” said Lampard, who was the sporting director in 84 competitive games (average points 1.75) at Stamford Bridge between 2019 and 2021.

“But I couldn’t make it to the top – the idea of ​​£20 million (around 23 million euros, i.e. Red.) for someone his age,” he said, despite sustained efforts, he was unable to get the management level around the then club owner Roman Abramovich through. Instead of moving to the Thames, Bellingham moved to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga in the summer of 2020 for a fee of 30.15 million euros.

Not only those in charge at the Blues, but also Lampard were surprised by his further development: “What he did from then on, his whole way, the way he played and dealt with things – the world is at his feet. Where is his ceiling? There doesn’t seem to be any at the moment,” the 45-year-old continued in ex-teammate John Obi Mikel’s podcast “Obi One”.

In Dortmund, Bellingham increased his market value from 11 to 120 million euros within three years. Ultimately, he scored 49 goals from 132 competitive games for Westphalia before he went on to Madrid in the summer, where the professional, who was recently named best youngster at the Ballon d’Or, set new standards right from the start. Lampard is convinced that the 27-time national player will also have a lasting impact on the future of the “Three Lions”:

“The boy is incredible. To go and do what he did in Madrid, with all the pressure that comes with being at such a big club and in such a big city at his age… Unbelievable. (…) I met his mother and father, he is very down-to-earth, he can do whatever he wants. If England have international success in the coming years, which I think is likely, he will play an absolutely central role in that.”
