Former Korean National Badminton Team Member Under Investigation for Attempted Sexual Assault Charges

It has been confirmed that Yoo Yeon-soo (37), a former member of the Korean national badminton team, is under police investigation on charges of attempting to sexually assault a Korean woman in the United States.

According to the police on the 1st, Incheon Yeonsu Police Station booked Mr. Yoo, a badminton coach, without detention on charges of attempted rape. Mr. Yoo is accused of attempting to sexually assault a Korean woman, Ms. A, in the United States last July. At the time, he was first arrested by the U.S. investigative authorities following Mr. A’s report, and later returned to Korea after being released on bail.

When Mr. A filed a complaint after returning to Korea, the Korean police began an investigation and sent Mr. Yoo to the prosecution on the 23rd of last month. However, the prosecution requested a supplementary investigation, and the police plan to send the case back to the prosecution after further investigation.

Mr. Yoo won a gold medal in the badminton team event at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and received medals three times at the World Championships. It is known that he is currently working as a freelance coach after retiring last year.
