Things are going to a crescendo with Petr Cech’s second sporting career. The former former football goalkeeper makes a top transfer in ice hockey at the age of 41.

Belfast Giants, the current champions of Great Britain, have signed the Czech. Cech is also a goalkeeper as an ice hockey player.

Cech is taken over on loan from Oxford City Stars, which plays in the second level. This is a “temporary emergency solution” because the club from Northern Ireland is struggling with injuries.

Cech became an ice hockey player in 2019, after ending his successful football career. He started at a club in the fourth level and quickly worked his way up.

Award-winning athlete

“Petr is an award-winning athlete who knows what it is like to perform at the highest level,” said Belfast Giants coach Adam Keefe. “His arrival will be of great value to the club.”

As a footballer, Cech played 124 international matches for the Czech Republic and almost 450 matches in the Premier League for Chelsea and Arsenal. In 2006, he suffered a fractured skull in a collision with a Reading player, after which he played goalkeeping with a helmet for years.

As a footballer, Cech won the Champions League, Europa League, four league titles and four FA Cups. In his home country, ice hockey is a big and popular sport. The Czech Republic became world ice hockey champion six times and won Olympic gold in 1998.
