Football: Spanish prosecutors demand nine years in prison for Dani Alves, accused of rape

Dani Alves risks spending nine years behind bars. The 40-year-old Brazilian has already been held in pre-trial detention in the Barcelona region since last January, but the Spanish prosecutor’s office has requested nine years in prison for the former Paris Saint-Germain defender, indicates the public prosecutor. He is accused of the rape of a 23-year-old young woman, which he allegedly committed on December 30, 2022 in a Catalan nightclub.

He is to be tried on a date which has not yet been set. The prosecution also demands compensation for the victim in the amount of 150,000 euros and “the prohibition (for Alves) to approach” her, according to the indictment. The Barcelona High Court confirmed the order established at the end of the investigation, deciding to refer Dani Alves to Spanish justice.

The statements of the victim and witnesses, as well as the expert opinions, constitute sufficient evidence to send the former Auriverde side to trial for the offense of sexual assault (criminal category including rape in Spain).

Following the announcement of his indictment, Daniel Alves was dismissed by his Mexican club Pumas. If he had denied the allegations to the Spanish media, the former FC Barcelona footballer had also changed his version several times. According to the defense, the sexual relationship was consensual. She also considers that the principle of presumption of innocence has been violated, given the media coverage of the case.
