Football: Sofiane Diop summoned for the first time with Morocco

One more player in the very closed clan of those who will have changed selections during their career. Eligible with France, Senegal and Morocco, Sofiane Diop, 23, finally turned to the Atlas Lions. The Nice attacking midfielder was called up by Walid Regragui for the first time, this Thursday, as part of the qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup against Eritrea (November 16 at 8 p.m.) and Tanzania (November 21 at 20 hours).

Called up thirteen times with the French Espoirs team (4 goals, 5 assists between September 2021 and September 2022), the former Monegasque has passed through all the youth categories. He participated in 7 of Ligue 1 leader Nice’s eleven matches.

The native of Tours also joins his former teammate, Amine Adli (Bayer Leverkusen), who also played with the Bleuets a few months ago. Semi-finalist at the last World Cup in Qatar in 2022, Morocco will try to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup, which would constitute a record for the country.
