The former English national football coach Terry Venables is dead. The former coach of teams such as Tottenham Hotspur and FC Barcelona died at the age of 80 after a long illness, the British news agency PA quoted on Sunday from a statement from the League Managers Association Family name.
Venables played more than 500 times for London clubs Chelsea, Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace. But he gained fame primarily as a coach: with FC Barcelona he won the Spanish championship and reached the final of the European Cup, and with Spurs he won the FA Cup.

In 1994, Venables became national coach and led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the 1996 home European Championships, where they lost on penalties to eventual European champions Germany. After goals from Alan Shearer and Stefan Kuntz early in the game, the score was 1-1 after regular time and extra time. England had the better chances, but once again failed because of their nerves.
Minute’s silence in Tottenham
In the penalty shootout, all five regular shooters on both sides scored. Then current England coach Gareth Southgate failed with his low shot into the left corner by Andreas Köpke before Andreas Möller’s goal decided the game. “I don’t know how we didn’t win,” Venables lamented years later.

“We are devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father, who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” the statement continued on Sunday. His former club Tottenham announced a minute’s silence before the home game against Aston Villa on Sunday and the players would wear mourning ribbon.
