Football and homosexuality: Almodovar, girls set an example – Football

“It must be tough for an elite player to step onto the pitch and be called a ‘faggot’.” Pedro Almodovar addresses the topic of homosexuality in some professional fields, including football, in an interview with El Pais. “The girls are giving a lot of lessons to the athletes” underlines the director. Starting from his world, that of cinema, he notes that there are genres and professions in which certain topics are more complex to deal with.

“Like in football” where “it seems that homosexuality doesn’t exist”. In this sense, he states that the players of the Spanish national team, winner of the last World Cup, “are giving the athletes many lessons”. “The girls who have won the World Cup behave in a completely natural way and nothing happens. They get married and nothing happens” is her comment.

An attitude that, in his opinion, would be unthinkable in men’s football. On the other hand, something very similar happens in bullfighting: “There are genres and professions that have been stuck for a long time”, in a world that “does not correspond to current reality”.
