According to his father, Mesut Özil was about to move to FC Bayern in 2010. Mustafa Özil now revealed that there was an unusual reason why the transfer didn’t take place and his son went to Real Madrid.

Mesut Özil almost ended up at FC Bayern Munich. This is what Mustafa Özil, the father of the soccer world champion, says. In the podcast “SchwarzRotGold: Mesut Özil visiting friends” on RTL+, which started this Thursday, the 58-year-old said: “In 2010, Mesut almost ended up at FC Bayern Munich instead of Real Madrid.”

Özil senior, who also looked after his son as a manager until 2013, cited his son’s relationship with Anna-Maria Lagerblom, the sister of pop star Sarah Connor, as the reason for the failure of the supposedly possible transfer. Bavaria “didn’t like to see that.”

Lagerblom, birth name Anna-Maria Lewe, was known in Bremen as a party girl and became a mother for the first time in 2002 at the age of 20. The child’s father is a Thai dancer from her older sister Sarah’s band. In 2005 she married the Finnish Werder professional Pekka Lagerblom. The marriage ended in divorce in 2010.

She was in a relationship with Özil, who moved from Schalke 04 to Weser in 2008, for one and a half years. Out of respect for its culture and religion, she dyed her hair black, converted to Islam and called herself Melek, which means angel in Turkish. The couple separated in the fall of 2011. Since then, Lagerblom has been dating rapper Bushido, whom she married in 2012. The couple has eight children.

Mustafa Özil has seen his son controlled by others for years. “As a father, because I know him well, I can say: he is still influenced. And exploited,” said Mustafa Özil: “You have to imagine it like this: If there is, how should I say, a cash cow somewhere, then there are many there. Interests from outside – family, relatives, environment, everyone. Until the donkey no longer gives gold and the connections slowly dissolve again.”

Özil’s political commitment

Özil resigned from the national team following the 2018 World Cup preliminary round exit in Russia and also denounced disrespect and racism in the German Football Association. Previously, a joint picture with teammate Ilkay Gündogan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan caused a stir. “Until 2014, Mesut wasn’t even remotely political. Neither Erdogan, neither our Chancellor (Angela) Merkel, nor (Olaf) Scholz, neither Uyghurs, nothing at all. So my point of view is that it is somehow led by some people. Basta. Point.”

Özil, who has now ended his active career, caused a stir several times with political statements. In December 2019, the then Arsenal FC professional made critical comments on social media about the oppression of the Uyghurs in China, most recently attracting attention with pro-Palestinian internet posts.
