Farewell to Judo Champion Dani Allerstorfer: A Look Back at His Career and Legacy

One thing is already certain: Saturday afternoon in Gmunden will be a special kind of emotional challenge for Daniel Allerstorfer. The 30-year-old will be fighting with UJZ Mühlviertel in the Upper Austria derby against arch-rival LZ Multikraft Wels for a place in the Bundesliga final from 1 p.m. Four-Final, immediately before the final fight the heavyweight is officially farewelled as a national team fighter (12 years at the highest international level).

Daniel Allerstorfer experienced the crowning moment of his international career on June 25, 2019 in Minsk. Austria’s mixed team (including Sabrina Filzmoser, Bernadette Graf, Michaela Polleres; Daniel Allerstorfer, Shamil Borchashvili, Stephan Hegyi, Lukas Reiter) beat the much higher rated teams from Serbia (4:1), Germany ( 4:2) and the Netherlands (4:2) and stormed to European Championship bronze. There was only a (1:4) defeat against Belarus. It was the only mixed team medal for Judo Austria so far and Dani Allerstorfer was right in the middle of the red-white-red celebration.

His greatest individual success was seventh place at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. Seventh places at the European Championships (2021, 2022) followed. In 2016 he managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. There Dani was drawn into Pool A with the eventual gold medalist and superstar Teddy Riner (FRA), bronze medalist Rafael Silva (BRA) and Renat Saidov (RUS). After five minutes, despite a brave fight on equal terms, the Russians were eliminated prematurely.

His last podium finish was third place at the home European Open in Oberwart 2022. This year in Linz he made his last appearance on the World Tour. THANK YOU, Dani, for 12 exciting years with the national team. We will miss you!
