Dirk Schuster is surprisingly released from 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The coach reacts unexpectedly positively to the decision. In his farewell letter he includes a meaningful message to those responsible.

The coaching earthquake on Betzenberg came out of nowhere. In a completely surprising move, second division soccer team 1. FC Kaiserslautern parted ways with head coach Dirk Schuster on Thursday and also relieved his assistant Sascha Franz of his duties.

The Palatinate team, which has not won in five games, responded to the current sporting situation with the exemption. “After a second half of last season that was unsatisfactory in terms of results, the team was able to start a positive series in the first third of the season, but overall the trends show an unsatisfactory development,” said the club.

The FCK had recently lost three games in a row under Schuster and had slipped to eleventh place in the table. Before the guest game at 1. FC Magdeburg on Saturday (8.30 p.m./Sky/Sport1), the lead over 16th in the table is. Schalke 04 only has five points. “I think it’s relatively normal that there would be difficult phases, especially in the second year,” said Schuster, who used to be a professional at Karlsruher SC, in a farewell message to the fans. “Our common goal was a midfield position – and we are now handing over to the team.”

Schuster thanks Kaiserslautern’s fans

Schuster, whose contract would have expired at the end of the season, led the training on Wednesday. The 55-year-old was supposed to comment on the upcoming game in Magdeburg on Thursday afternoon. But that didn’t happen anymore. Schuster expressly thanked the fans for this: “Betzenberg is once again being talked about with respect and recognition in football Germany. You can be proud of that. And that makes us proud too. That’s why we can say: It was a great time. Have a great time with you!”

It was initially unclear who would look after the team for the next game. The club simply announced that managing director Thomas Hengen would comment promptly. According to information from “Kicker”, Enrico Maaßen (most recently FC Augsburg) and the former VfB interim coach Michael Wimmer, who is currently under contract with the Austrian first division club Austria Wien, are possible successor candidates. There are said to have already been discussions with Wimmer.
