Dallas Mavericks Rally for Another Comeback Win, Defeating Orlando Magic 117-102

The Dallas Mavericks pulled off another comeback win, beating the Orlando Magic 117-102. As was the case the day before against Charlotte, the Mavs made up a double-digit halftime deficit.

Orlando Magic (4-3) – Dallas Mavericks (6-1) 102:117 (BOXSCORE)

With a three-pointer just under two minutes before the end Luka Doncic finally put the lid on the game and made it 114:100. It was the fifth converted three-pointer for the Slovenian, who scored 28 points (9/17 FG), 6 assists and also 6 turnovers in 34 minutes. This time it wasn’t just the superstar who knew how to shine.

When Dallas took the lead for the first time in the first quarter on a Josh Green layup nine minutes into the second half, Doncic hadn’t been on the court for a while. The guard crashed the back of his head into Magic center Goga Bitadze’s knee and had to be replaced with a suspected concussion. Doncic didn’t score any points in the third quarter, but the Mavs still won the period 33:19 and thus overturned a temporary 15-point deficit.

Doncic got help especially from Tim Hardaway Jr., who contributed 21 points (8/16) off the bench. Kyrie Irving had the same result (8/20), who also contributed 10 assists. As a team, the Mavs once again converted 15 three-pointers at a rate of just under 38 percent. That made the difference in this game as Orlando scored weakly from outside, especially after the break. Only Cole Anthony was able to hit a three-pointer in the middle of the final period, otherwise there were 15 bricks.

This also applied to the Wagner brothers, with Moritz Wagner always finding success at least under the basket. Like Anthony, the big man put up 19 points coming off the bench, while Franz Wagner (12, 5/13 FG, 4 assists) remained mostly pale. The Magic’s best scorer was Paolo Banchero (22, 8/18, 6 TO), but he also disappeared after the break.

The Mavs are now 6-1 and are in second place in the Western Conference. It is the second-best start in franchise history, only the Mavs were better in 2002/03 (7-0). Now it’s back home where there are home games against the Toronto Raptors and the LA Clippers (in-season tournament). Orlando remains in sixth place in the East.
