Controversial Departure: French Coach Hervé Coudray Removed from Swiss Women’s Team

After two matches at the head of the Swiss women’s team, the French coach Hervé Coudray would have lost his functions because of language discrepancies against one of the players on the selection.

Appointed Switzerland coach in May, Hervé Coudray (58 years old) only played two short matches at the head of the Swiss selection. Time for a blunder at home against Luxembourg (48-56) then a disaster in Montenegro (61-85) at the opening of qualifying for EuroBasket 2025. And also, unfortunately, time for a little controversy extra-sporty…

Friday afternoon, the Swiss federation published a press release. “Swiss Basketball was informed of language discrepancies by one of the executives of the senior women’s national team towards an adult athlete for which it immediately apologized. In agreement with the person concerned, Swiss Basketball decided that it would no longer take care of the senior women’s national team. In accordance with its obligations, Swiss Basketball informed Swiss Sport Integrity of the situation at the beginning of the week. No further comments will be made given the referral to this body. »

According to Radio Fribourg, the man concerned would be Hervé Coudray, the coach, whose immediate apologies would therefore not have been enough to allow him to keep his position as coach. Erik Lehmann, the general secretary of Swiss Basketball, refused to confirm the identity of the person concerned to our colleagues. Already short-lived coach of Mali in 2010 (15th in the World Cup), the Breton technician was appointed national technical manager of the federation in November 2022, following his departure from Le Havre. We do not yet know if he will continue in this role.
