Bundesliga: Union Berlin separates from its coach Urs Fischer, architect of the club’s rise

One more dismissal within European football. After Rudi Garcia (Naples) and José Rojo Martin Pacheta (Villarreal), it is the turn of Urs Fischer to be sacked by his club, Union Berlin. Looking for the slightest point since August 26 and a victory against Darmstadt (1-4), the club from the German capital currently occupies last place in the Bundesliga after eleven days. Arriving in 2018 when the club was in the second division, the Swiss coach will have led Berlin to the Champions League this season for the first time in its history after finishing fourth in the league in 2022-2023. A competition which is no more successful for Union Berlin since it occupies the fourth and last place in group C with one point after four days, behind Réal Madrid (12 pts), Naples (7 pts) and Braga (3 pts ).

“Urs Fischer has achieved extraordinary things at Union and has taken the club to a whole new sporting level. I would like to thank Urs for his commitment and the always respectful and trusting cooperation that has linked us for a long time in the world of football. On behalf of all employees and players, I wish him the best for the future and great professional success,” said Oliver Ruhnert, general director of professional football at Union Berlin.

The interim role will be taken care of until further notice by the club’s under-19 coach, Marco Grote.
