Brentwood Academy football coach resigns after disappointing season

Brentwood Academy football coach Jacob Gill has resigned after one season.

An email from Brentwood Academy athletic director Jason Mathews to faculty and staff obtained by The Tennessean stated Gill resigned as the Eagles coach. Brentwood Academy went 2-10, the worst season in school history.

That included a 1-9 regular season and a 56-21 mercy rule loss to Father Ryan on Sept. 8 — the first running clock defeat by a Tennessee opponent since the rule was put in place in 2007.

“We are grateful for the hard work put in by our coaches, players and managers and the supportive families in our community at large,” Mathews wrote in the email. “While change is never easy, the foundation of our mission and program is strong and we are encouraged by the opportunities ahead.”

Mathews said the school will begin to search immediately for a replacement.

Gill was in his first year as a head coach after serving as the defensive coordinator at Shiloh Christian (Arkansas).

He was hired in January to replace Cody White, who resigned as BA’s coach and athletic director after going 103-27 in 11 seasons at the school. White’s teams won four consecutive Division II-AAA state championships from 2015-18, along with four other state semifinal appearances.

Brentwood Academy was considered a preseason title contender in Division II-AAA this season after narrowly losing in the 2022 semifinals, 44-39, to eventual champion Baylor.

The Eagles returned five-star quarterback George MacIntyreranked as the No. 2 junior QB nationally by 247Sports. He was joined in the offseason by Knoxville Webb transfer Shavar Young, a receiver with offers from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Michigan among others. Former Oakland receiver T.T. Hill, who has Power 5 offers, also transferred to BA over the summer.

On defense, the Eagles returned leading tackler and linebacker A.J. Barbat, as well as defensive end Hank Weber, a senior committed to Wisconsin.
