Boston Red Sox Make Player Moves to Compete in 2024: Luis Urías Traded for Pitcher Isaiah Campbell

The American League East division was one of the most competitive in Major League Baseball during 2023 and the Boston Red Sox do not want to be at the bottom in 2024. Therefore, management has begun player movements and the first involved the Mexican Luis Urías.

The Red Sox traded Urías to the Seattle Mariners in order to obtain pitcher Isaiah Campbell. The move was announced by Justin Hollander, the general manager of baseball operations for ‘The M’s’.

The native of Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, was a candidate not to receive a contract offer from the Red Sox, but by exchanging him the Boston team obtained Campbell in exchange instead of being left empty-handed.

Urías, who served as a second baseman with Boston, has six seasons of experience in the Major Leagues. During the 2023 season, the Mexican played for both the Milwaukee Brewers and the Red Sox and had a batting average of .194 after hitting 28 hits in 144 at bats. The Sonoran hit three full-round hits and drove in 18 runs.

Isaiah Campbell will add depth to Boston’s bullpen

Campbell’s presence will serve in the Boston bullpen where the arms of Chris Martin, Nick Pivetta, Mauricio Llovera and Garrett Whitlock stand out where the Red Sox closer in 2023 was Kenley Jansen. The right-handed pitcher served as a reliever in his first major league season and appeared in 27 games for the Mariners in which he posted a 2.83 ERA. The Portuguese native finished the year with a 4-1 record and one save.
