For the first time in its history, the European Athletics Association will award prizes for an event it organizes. It will be during the next European Championships which will take place in Rome from June 7 to 12, a few weeks before the Olympic Games in Paris.
“We said to ourselves that we could not afford to organize European Championships where the best would not be present,” explains Frenchman Jean Gracia, first vice-president of the Association. We are ready to invest a little money to encourage athletes to participate in the European Championships. »
Participation and performance bonuses
The amount allocated to these bonuses and the way in which they will be allocated are currently under discussion. “The idea,” continues Jean Gracia, “is to have an agreement with ambassadors who would come to participate and promote the event. »
Other bonuses should be distributed based on results. These would not be place-based rewards, but rather performance-based. The idea would be to promote a shot putter at 23 meters rather than a winner of the 100m in 10”20.
This principle will not concern the European Indoor Championships (early March in Glasgow).
