Barakaldo will once again bring together the greatest national wrestling talents

Once again, Barakaldo will once again become the epicenter of national wrestling. Virtually all the medalists from the Spanish Championships, as well as wrestlers from other countries, will meet on November 25 in the town of the Left Bank to take part in the XV Barakaldo Tournament and, above all, in the IV Maider Cup Unda, a highly prestigious championship that has more and more tradition. Between these two competitions, the organizers hope to exceed the number of 350 participants that there were last year. Among them will be the country’s most prominent names in this discipline, as well as fighters from French, Italian, Estonian or Belarusian clubs.

From 10:00 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m. the fifteenth edition of the Barakaldo Tournament will take place, a competition that has become a classic and that allows the little ones to take their first steps in competition. Children from six to twelve years old participate in it. The highlight will be in the afternoon and is none other than the fifth edition of a Maider Unda Cup, which arouses the interest of the best fighters. “The name of Maider Unda makes everyone move in the state fight, everyone wants to participate in a Cup that bears his name,” highlighted Roberto Hojas, coach of the Munoa Wrestling Club, the organizing entity of the event, in his presentation.

The Baracald club has very high expectations in this tournament, due to the good level of its members and the fact of being at home. Among its most outstanding fighters, two of them are worth mentioning. Roufaida Hamidi is a 20-year-old fighter of Algerian origin and current Spanish U20 champion. At the moment, she cannot compete in the European Championships due to bureaucratic issues, but in this competition she is the absolute favorite in her category. Aser Ebro is an eleven-time champion of Spain at 22 years old. He is part of the national team and this tournament will serve as preparation for the pre-Olympic tournaments that he will play between April and May. The great dream of this fighter from Cruces, as well as that of his club, is that he can qualify for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

In the presentation of these competitions, Mayor Amaia del Campo pointed out that “they are two championships that have grown over time both in participants and in prestige at the state level.” “Not only will it make visible a sport as dynamic as wrestling, but it will once again position us on the map of high-level competitions,” she added. The councilor valued the fact of having the collaboration of Maider Unda, one of the great leaders of this sport, by participating in two Olympic Games and winning bronze in London 2012. «In a world where sport, especially fight, it is perceived as having a majority dominance of men, it is a luxury to have references like Maider,” he noted.

Highlight the role of women

Maider Unda showed that “it is a pride for me to have a tournament and a cup in my name.” Likewise, he acknowledged that “it is still difficult for me to see my image as a reference. It is true that I, in no way experienced this of being on the path of equality, I was more of a weirdo, but, above all, a person who did not look at gender. Precisely, this year, this event will coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In this sense, the mayor emphasized that “this is another example of our commitment to the eradication of sexist violence, highlighting the fundamental role of women in all areas of society. In this way, we will continue to strengthen the common goal of creating an environment where women not only participate, but shine with their full potential.
