4 Must-See Sports at the 2023 Parapan American Games Recommended by Usach Academic

Rosanna Domarchi, a Usach academic, recommended the sports that can captivate in the event that begins this Friday, November 17.

The professor of the Pedagogy in Physical Education degree at the University of Santiago, Rosanna Domarchi, recommended paying attention to four special disciplines that will be present in the Parapan American Games.

One of the must-sees is boccia, because it is a sport of continuous attention and precision. “It is practiced individually, in pairs or as a team, originally created for athletes with cerebral palsy or serious deficiencies,” commented the expert in adapted and inclusive sports.

The game consists of competitors who face each other with a red or blue ball and must throw their ball towards the white Jack. The closest shot wins.

At the 2023 Parapan American Games we will also be able to see wheelchair rugby, which is an intense contact game. The specialist added that “wheelchairs can reach speeds of up to 30 k/h, therefore, players must have great skill to control and handle them at high speed.”

In this sport, contact between chairs is allowed to get the ball across the opposing team’s goal line.

A third unmissable discipline, according to the academic, is goalball. This does not have its counterpart in conventional sports because it was created for people with visual disabilities.

Domarchi, who is also a referee in this sport, assured that “I recommend it because it is innovative, challenging and keeps the audience captive from start to finish, who must remain silent while the ball is in play.” This discipline is developed by scoring goals with the hand at ground level with a sound ball, which weighs more than 1 kilo, and can be thrown in various ways, depending on the disability. The court has tactile lines, in relief, that allow the players to refer to the place or position of the sides and center.

Finally, we will find para badminton, which was recently incorporated into the Paralympic program in Tokyo 2020. This adapted sport is very similar to its conventional counterpart, but unlike it, it has 6 sports classes, depending on the type and degree of impairment.

The objective is to hit a projectile, known as a feather, with a light racket that passes over the net and falls into the opponent’s sector.

You can play in a wheelchair or standing. In the case of the first form, Rosanna Domarchi emphasized that “competition chairs are modified to help athletes. They can have the backrest low to avoid player interference; Another retrofit is to add wheels at the back to prevent it from tipping over when the player leans back.”

In this sporting event that begins this Friday, November 17, the Chilean delegation will participate with 166 competitors in 17 disciplines, competing against 31 countries.
