2023 NFL MVP race, odds: Mahomes back on top, Stroud enters the fray

Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts went toe-to-toe in Super Bowl LVII in February, with Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs winning 38-35.

And now Mahomes — the reigning MVP — is back on top as the lone favorite at +270. This is after being tied with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts at +350 to win the award.

Behind Mahomes is Hurts, whose MVP odds sit at +300 after the Eagles’ impressive 28-23 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9. Hurts threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. The Eagles had a bye in Week 10.

Rounding out the top three is Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins QB’s odds shortened slightly from +650 last week and now sit at +600.

Fourth on the MVP odds list is Jackson. In Week 9, he climbed to the very top of the board at +350 after Baltimore’s decisive 37-3 victory over the Seahawks. Before that win, his odds to win MVP were +600. However, the Browns upset Baltimore 33-31 in Week 10, and Jackson’s MVP odds lengthened to +600 again.

Is CJ Stroud making a case for winning MVP with the Houston Texans?

One of the biggest moves up the MVP oddsboard was from C.J. Stroud. His odds to win MVP were as long as +9000. Now, at FanDuel, the rookie’s MVP odds are +2000.

“I saw the MVP chatter. It feels a little bit early,” FOX Sports NFL insider David Helman said on Monday’s NFL on FOX Podcast. “But here we are.

“Houston gets this incredible win against a playoff contender, against Joe Burrow. … So it’s not out the realm of possibility that Houston still wins the AFC South and maybe this isn’t as crazy of a conversation as it sounds.”

“Undisputed” co-host Keyshawn Johnson has a different NFC quarterback in mind.

“They are for real,” Keyshawn said about the Cowboys. “And if they continue to keep playing the way that they’re playing — no mistakes … [Dak Prescott] is slowly sliding his name into that [MVP] conversation.”

On the other side of the conversation are notable players whose MVP odds have lengthened — in particular, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert.

The Jaguars dropped their third game of the season with a 34-3 Week 10 loss to the 49ers. After that loss, Lawrence’s odds moved from +2000 to +3000.

And Herbert’s odds got longer after the Chargers lost their fifth game in a 41-38 defeat at the hands of the Lions. His MVP odds went from +5000 to +7500.
