Frankfurt/Kaiserslautern. Last weekend, TSG Nordwest 1898, together with the city of Frankfurt, hosted the world’s largest judo youth tournament, the 7th International Adler Cup 2023. 1,600 participants from over 30 nations traveled to Frankfurt to compete with the elite of international judo talent and to demonstrate first-class judo over two days.
Of course, the Kaiserslautern Judo Sports Club and its young athletes could not be missing from this major sporting event. In total, the JSV started with twelve judoka from the U11 to U18 age groups to compete with opponents from home and abroad and to enjoy international competition.
In the men’s U18 age group, the 15-year-old young talent Leon Herrmann, who actually still belongs to the U16 age group, dropped the bomb in the weight class up to 50 kg and won the gold medal in a brilliant run. The sports student from Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium gave his opponents no chance and won all of his fights early on using Ippon. In particular, his strong armbar repeatedly showed itself to be the special weapon against the actually strong competition from the Netherlands and the German talent centers Potsdam, Berlin, Gießen and Petersberg. After a total of five fights and a total fight time of just 4 minutes 30 (fight time for a fight is normally 5 minutes), he underlined his dominance and once again made an exclamation mark at the national level. HHG coach Aydin Kempirbaev and club coach André Wittek were extremely satisfied with the performance and praised the motivation and discipline that Leon exemplifies in everyday training.
