Werder Bremen Coach Ole Werner Under Pressure Ahead of Union Game: How He Prepares His Team

Tuesday afternoon, 2:32 p.m.: Ole Werner (35) enters the training field wearing a hat and a thick jacket.

The Werder coach didn’t just have to dress warmly because of the autumn weather. After the weak start to the season (lost seven out of nine competitive games), things could soon become uncomfortable for him too.

A success in the home game against Union (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.), which has even bigger problems than Werder with eight defeats in a row (!) would be all the more important.

Professional boss Clemens Fritz: “We are aware of where we are. We have dropped points in the last few games. We have to put the shoe on ourselves.”

Werder Bremen: This is how Ole Werner deals with pressure!

How does Werner prepare his boys for the important Union game? At the start of training on Tuesday, Werner gave a one-minute speech. The players gathered in a circle, mostly listening to their boss with their arms folded behind their backs.

While the professionals warmed up afterwards, Werner distributed the balls for the various exercises. Signs of tension? None! Because Werner casually held up a ball and delivered an artistic heel performance.

Noticeable: During a casual passing exercise, Werner looked closely, but stayed in the background. His assistants Patrick Kohlmann and Hannes Drews took over command. Drews in particular could be heard all over the pitch with his loud announcements, motivating the players to apply more pressure during a counter-pressing exercise.

After the first break, Werner could be heard significantly more. “This takes too long. Everything happens while standing. The ball has to keep moving. Faster, faster,” he shouted to his boys. Apparently that was well received. Because just like the coach, the professionals were significantly louder and more committed in training than in the last few weeks.

Nicolai Rapp and Romano Schmid fought a tough duel. Unlike assistant coach Drews (“Hello, hello”), Werner didn’t comment on the action; he seemed to have enjoyed the effort and fire.

He was less satisfied with the subsequent games. After Olivier Deman played a back pass rather than deep, Werner interrupted the drill, shook his head and clapped his hands angrily before making an announcement to Deman in English.

Werner repeatedly asked his players to go deeper. In particular, he frequently gestured to youngster Leon Opitz from the outside to point out the correct walking paths. But even after unsuccessful actions, he cheered up the professionals: “Still, very well done.”

The coach often directed the defense in particular. First, Werner explained to Felix Agu how he had to move the defensive line. He then said to Justin Njinmah: “Come on Justin, defend together.”

After almost 90 minutes the session was over. Curious: Werner decided not to gather his players in a circle again, as was usual. While some people were still practicing shots on goal, Werner already left the pitch and diligently fulfilled the fans’ requests for autographs and photos on the way to the dressing room.
