Timberwolves withdraw from the Superliga

The Vienna Timberwolves announced on Thursday that they were voluntarily withdrawing from the men’s super league to the second division. According to the media release, the decision was based on financial reasons or the threat of loss of a significant sponsorship contribution. A sustainable, secure future did not allow for any other responsible option. As a precaution, the Timberwolves had also applied for a license for the second division.

“It is a step of common sense, based on the economic conditions,” said Vice Presidents Markus Kraetschmer and Stefan Krejcza in unison. “Numerous discussions with and in the city did not produce the hoped-for results; the financial framework for professional basketball does not exist in Vienna.”

Now it’s time to consolidate. As soon as there is a viable economic future concept for the Superliga, a return to promotion will be considered.

The Timberwolves finished the current season in fourth place in the qualifying round, one of twelve clubs in tenth place overall.
