The World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) designated the venue for the second edition of the Baseball Champions League (BCL). It should be noted that the WBSC plans to extend the number of teams for this edition, so it is likely that the competition will be longer.
Mérida, Yucatán in Mexico was the headquarters of the first edition. It had the participation of five teams, with the Leones de Yucatán being the hosts as brand new champions in 2022 in the summer circuit of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB). The guests were the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (United States), the Caimanes de Barranquilla (Colombia) and Alazanes de Granma (Cuba).
It should be noted that the project raises the possibility of having teams from Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. The WBSC has 210 affiliated federations. The ambition is to make the team tournament global.
WBSC and headquarters for 2024
The international organization announced the headquarters for the 2024 edition. It should be noted that WBSC did not mention dates for the second BCL, nor the number of participating teams.
To the surprise of many, Mexico will continue to host the Baseball Champions League, but this time it will be the city of Puebla that will host the WBSC tournament. That said, the Pericos de Puebla, LMB champions in September 2023, will be the hosts for 2024.
The Serdán Brothers baseball park will return to have an international tournament organized by the WBSC. Let us remember that Puebla hosted the pre-Olympic for Tokyo 2022 with the presence of teams of the stature of the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
Regarding the 2023 edition, the representative of the American Union, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, who won the BCL title. They defeated the Caimanes de Barranquilla by an 8-0 shutout with great pitching by Tyler Grauer who pitched for six innings allowing only four hits, did not walk anyone and struck out seven opponents.
The WBSC will have time to finalize details of the tournament, in addition to making official how many participants we will have and the start date.
