Vote for your All-Time Bundesliga Dream Team: Celebrating 50 years of Austrian football

As part of the 50th anniversary of the Austrian Bundesliga, fans and journalists are called upon to fill their top line-up with former kickers. Of course, among the candidates there are also some kickers who earned their living in Graz.

VIENNA/GRAZ. Friends of the sport will hardly have missed it: the Austrian Bundesliga is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season. In the course of this, they came up with a lot of ideas – such as the election for the “50-year Bundesliga team” that has now been announced. Fans can put together their historic top eleven plus coach until October 27th.

You can choose from players who have made it into the Bundesliga selections of the last few decades – including, of course, some who earned their living in Graz and left a lasting impression.

Black and red candidates

Both a former black and a red crowd favorite are competing for a “body” in the attack. In addition to names like Hans Krankl, Toni Polster and Helmut Köglberger, Ivica Vastic and Rene Aufhauser are among the best offensive players.

Some ex-Grazers are also represented in the midfield: on the left, neo-Hong Kong legionnaire Jakob Jantscher takes on competitors such as Peter Stöger, Antonin Panenka and Andreas Invanschitz. In addition, the former red jackets Felix Gasselich, Josef Stering, Zlatko Junuzuvic and Michi Liendl as well as Aufhauser again made it onto the list of candidates.

Side note: No Graz native has been nominated for the goalkeeper position – which seems strange in view of the veteran striker Otto Konrad, who made it to the UEFA Cup final with Salzburger Austria in the mid-1990s.

Up for debate for the best defense are Heri Weber on the attack side and Mario Tokic on the GAK side – as well as Joachim Standfest, a kicker who once played for both major Graz clubs. He has this in common with Walter Schachner and Hermann Stessl, both of whom eventually coached the GAK and were nominated for the top coaching position.

Although there is another ex-coach of the Black and Whites up for election in Otto Baric, from the perspective of their supporters the decision for Sturm’s first master and coach of the century, Ivan Osim, will probably be very clear.
