Veronika Kudermetova, 19th player in the world and seeded No. 8, won the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo on Sunday, beating in the final the American Jessica Pegula (7-5, 6-1), ranked fourth in the WTA and seeded No. 2, in one hour and 24 minutes. The Russian player thus won her second title on the circuit, after that of Charleston two years ago.
In the quarter-final, Kudermetova eliminated Iga Swiatek, the world No. 2, then fought three hours and 25 minutes in the half to overcome Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (7-6 [6]6-7 [2]6-3).
