Urgent Need for Legislation as Italy Faces Increasing Environmental and Hydrogeological Risks

(by Stefano Cucco) “While the weather alert returns to numerous areas of Italy, the data released by the National System for Environmental Protection removes any alibi for the urgency of approving the law against indiscriminate consumption of land, which has been pending in Parliament for 10 years”.

To reiterate it is Francesco VincenziPresident of the National Association of Consortia for the Management and Protection of the Territory and Irrigation Waters (ANBI), which continues: “In a condition of accentuated fragility in the face of the climate crisis, along the Peninsula, a further 77 square kilometers of territory were waterproofed in 2022, more than 10% more than the year before; of these, over 900 hectares fall in areas of medium hydraulic risk and 4,800 hectares have been removed from agricultural use. This not only increases the hydrogeological danger for populations, but costs 9 billion per year in loss of ecosystem services.”

Time ANBI – continues the president – points out the insufficiency of the hydraulic network in the face of extreme weather events and the need for investments to improve its efficiency, as well as new infrastructure; the data released today testifies to the further exposure of the territory to risk, thanks to the insistence of an unbridled concrete culture on the culture of prevention. The picture is therefore very clear; at the next emergency of natural origin, no one will be able to ask: why?
