Unexpected Nominations and Absences in SC Freiburg’s National Team Squads

With regard to the national team squads, things are going a lot differently at SC Freiburg in the current period than usual. The appointment of the recently injured striker Michael Gregoritsch by ÖFB coach Ralf Rangnick was particularly surprising.

After the 3-0 defeat in Munich, where SC, who had no chance at all, got off lightly, Christian Streich turned his attention to the future. He hopes that some of the players who have recently been missing will return soon, that the national players will survive their business trips in good health and that the professionals who have stayed at home will be able to gain strength.

Michael Gregoritsch is one of those who could make a comeback soon. In Munich, however, the striker was missing from the squad due to his calf injury, as was previously the case against West Ham, in Frankfurt and Piraeus. At one point in the 2-0 win against Augsburg, a substitute appearance was enough before the complaints returned immediately afterwards.

Nevertheless, Gregoritsch was summoned to the ÖFB selection in Vienna by Austria’s national coach Rangnick. How does that fit together? “Our wish was for Michael to stay in Freiburg and continue to be treated and introduced,” says SC sports director Klemens Hartenbach in an interview with kicker. However, Rangnick did not recklessly insist on FIFA’s obligation to provide support for the ongoing European Championship qualification, but instead sought a conversation with Streich.

Ralf Rangnick would like to have Gregerl on the team.

“There was a good exchange between both coaches. Ralf Rangnick would like to have Gregerl with the team, his therapy is of course continuing in Austria,” explains Hartenbach about the background: “The medical departments are in communication and it was agreed that No risk is taken with regard to a possible deployment.” Gregoritsch, who is Austria’s best shooter in the current qualification with four goals, could only play if there is clear safety from the medical point of view.

The 1.93 meter man only trained individually on Wednesday in Vienna. The home game on Friday (8:45 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) against Belgium will probably come too early. Unlike Freiburg’s central defender Philipp Lienhart, who was recently in Rangnick’s starting line-up four times in a row.

Because of the current attacking misery in the German coach’s team, Marko Arnautovic is certain to be out alongside Gregoritsch, SC summer signing Junior Adamu was nominated on Sunday evening. The SC officials would also have preferred to see the 22-year-old, who was out at the start of the season due to patellar tendon problems and only made his starting debut last Thursday against West Ham, in Freiburg. But Streich and Rangnick, whose team will be challenged in Azerbaijan on Monday, also discussed this personality.

Doan uses the break for an operation

Otherwise, there are currently two fairly safe candidates missing from the Freiburg international squad list. Defense chief Matthias Ginter, who was out in Munich due to illness, has to deal with the disappointment of not being part of new national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s debut ensemble.

The experienced central defender (51 international caps) was already missing from the DFB squad in September after playing three 90-minute international matches in March and June. The four-time tournament participant (World Cup 2014, 2018, 2022 and European Championship 2021) should still have a chance of jumping onto the European Championship bandwagon through good performances. Especially if he consistently returns to the top form he showed at SC last season.

Ritsu Doan canceled the friendly games against Canada and Tunisia from the Japanese national team because he was using the league break for wisdom tooth surgery. Meanwhile, Kiliann Sildillia has reason to be happy. The defender has his first chance to prove himself in France’s traditionally strong U-21 team. Sildillia, like almost all SC professionals, is currently not performing consistently well, but is a regular member of staff and can already boast 40 Bundesliga appearances.

German U-21 players returned to Freiburg earlier

While Freiburg professional Roland Sallai, who has been in the best form since the start of the season, plays a key role in Hungary’s national team, as has always been the case recently, the SC is also represented by a trio in Germany’s U21 team. In addition to Kenneth Schmidt and Merlin Röhl, who were deployed in September, regular goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has now returned to the DFB juniors.

A small advantage for the SC training next week for extremely bitter and tragic reasons: Since the U21 game in Israel planned for Tuesday was postponed due to the terrible attacks by the radical Islamic terrorist organization Hamas on Israeli territory, the selected players will travel on Saturday back to their clubs.
