With the gold medals in the women’s synchronized three-meter springboard and men’s individual platform, the Mexican diving team closed a historic participation in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

After six days of competition, the discipline, which has been affected by problems with its federation, achieved eight of the 10 titles in dispute, surpassing the four it obtained in Lima 2019.

Arantxa Chávez and Paola Pineda were the best on trampoline with a total of 285.48 points, while Randal Willars went from less to more to take the crown from 10 meters.

I am very happy to have been part of this historic harvest for Mexico and I congratulate all my colleagues for the effort they made. In today’s final (yesterday), we worked to win and it was achieved, we were super concentrated, following the coach’s instructions. Although I have not had many competitions with Arantxa, we had excellent communication to be the best, said Pineda.

In the platform final, the Mexican competitors overcame a difficult start to take the 1-3 lead. With a spectacular last jump, Willars was first with 479.40 points, while Kevin Zamudio took the bronze with 451.60; The silver was won by Canadian Nathan Zsombor.

It was a complicated competition, we had some mistakes in the first jumps, fortunately we were able to get back into the rhythm to give Mexico more joy. The participation of the entire team was very good and shows that we are still a powerhouse, said Willars.

The consecration

In Chile, figures of ornamental jumping were established, such is the case of the Olympic medalists Alejandra Orozco and Gabriela Agúndez, while others emerged, such as Paola Pineda and Osmar Olvera, who confirmed the good moment his career is going through by achieving three golden metals.

The total harvest of the divers was eight gold, two silver and one bronze for a total of 11.

The Mexican mermaids and mermen closed their participation in the Pan American Games with a historic bronze. Miranda Grana, Meli-ssa Rodríguez, Marijo Mata and Sofía Revilak took the podium in the 4×100 relay, an event in which our country had not won a medal for 20 years.

With a time of 4:04.37 minutes they achieved a Mexican record by surpassing the 4:06.85 they clocked at the Fukuoka 2023 World Cup.

The last time Mexico managed to get into the top three was in the 2003 Santo Domingo edition, when Adriana Marmolejo, Ale Galán, Arenas López and Daniella de Alba won bronze.

In other results of the day, the Mexican men’s team made up of Diego Camacho, Miguel de Lara, Jorge Iga and Andrés Dupont finished in fourth place in the 4×100 meters combined final; Dylan Porges, also a tricolor, finished in fifth place in the men’s 1,500 freestyle.

Swimming culminated its attendance in Santiago with a harvest of two silver and three bronze medals, surpassing the performance of Lima 2019.
