The “Sorolla”, from Merediz, awaits the decision of the Committee to undertake the adventure in the Global Solo Challenge

Juan Merediz’s ‘Sorolla’ is already in the chapel, but… At the close of this press release, the regatta committee still has not yet made a decision regarding the departure of the group of 7 boats that tomorrow, Saturday, October 28, at 3:00 p.m., they should face the challenge of the Global Solo Challenge, thus joining the fleet that was already sailing.

The committee is carefully considering the decision it must make, for the safety of the sailors and especially when the forecasts in La Coruña point to winds of more than 40 knots and waves that can reach 5 meters. Extremely tough conditions in those first miles for the seven boats in that area of the Costa de la Muerte.

All the boats, including Juan Merediz’s Pogo40 ‘Sorolla’, have been throughout the morning finalizing preparations and stocking up on the necessary provisions for the crossing. Merediz has been working on various aspects of the ship, especially everything related to cavalry and improving some material aspects. The ‘Sorolla’ has also passed the latest security checks and placed the ‘online’ tracking devices for the regatta.

Boat and sailors are prepared, although in the minds of the seven sailors it is in that very complicated and tough weather forecast that is expected for tomorrow. They are all in favor of waiting 24 hours since for Sunday there is a small gap, or truce, that would allow them to take the exit and cross the Costa de la Muerte with certain guarantees.

The creator and organizer of the GSC, Marco Nannini, comments regarding these planned conditions that: «Employers are evaluating their options. Unlike other events, in a round-the-world trip, the boats are prepared, in theory, to face any weather conditions. Therefore, the decision to cast off or delay the departure depends exclusively on each skipper”, adding that “everyone is aware of the dangers that an increase in wind speed can entail in the vicinity of Cape Finisterre and some models indicate gusts of up to 50-60 knots”, concluding: “However, the situation could become complicated just in the moments before the time set for departure, putting skippers in a difficult situation by having to decide whether to delay the departure waiting for weather conditions to be even more favorable.”.

For this GSC outing, the largest at the moment, and as rivals to Juan Merediz’s ‘Sorolla’, they will be on board a Class 40, Riccardo Tosetto in the Obportus 3, David Linger in the Koloa Maoli, François Gouin on the Kawan 3 and Cole Brauer on the First Light. Ronnie Simpson in his Open 50′ Shipyard Brewing and Alessandro Tosetti in the ULDB 65′ Aspra complete the list of competitors taking on the challenge in this next outing.
