According to data from the National Health Insurance Corporation on the 26th, ‘Status of health insurance treatment for patients with shoulder lesions’, the number of patients receiving shoulder lesion treatment increased from 2.266 million in 2018 to 2.426 million in 2022, an increase of 159,635 (7%) in the past five years. ) increased. During the same period, men increased by 87,745 (8.8%) from 995,849 to 1,083,594, and women increased by 71,890 (5.7%) from 1,270,380 to 1,342,270.

By age, among the total number of patients (2,425,864), those in their 60s accounted for the largest number at 673,967 (27.8%). This was followed by 658,793 people in their 50s (27.2%) and 360,363 people in their 40s (14.9%).

As the number of patients increased, health insurance treatment costs also increased. Shoulder lesion medical expenses increased by 235.6 billion won (8.1%) from 644.7 billion won in 2018 to 880.2 billion won in 2022.

Kim Seong-hoon, professor of orthopedic surgery at National Health Insurance Ilsan Hospital, said, “Recently, the number of middle-aged people enjoying sports that involve a lot of shoulder movement, such as golf, has increased.” He added, “With the strength around the scapula relatively weakened, excessive exercise that puts a strain on the shoulder “As a result, the incidence of shoulder impingement syndrome and rotator cuff-related diseases is increasing.”

Professor Kim said, “Shoulder lesions commonly occur after the age of 40 when degenerative changes in the rotator cuff tendons begin,” and “Avoiding tasks and exercises that repeatedly raise the arm and simply stretching the shoulder backwards intermittently can help prevent the disease.” “It’s a big help,” he explained.
