The NBA’s Efforts to Prevent Absences and Promote Full Season Participation by Big Stars

The NBA continues to try to prevent its big stars from being absent frequently during the regular season. With measures such as the minimum of 65 games played to qualify for individual awards or fines for teams that give their best players too much rest, the league is confident that the load management stop being a problem, but recently he wanted to insist on this approach and remind the players that he wants them to approach the competition with the mentality of playing every match.

“We are emphasizing that this is an 82-game season,” said Joe Dumars, executive vice president of the NBA. «I think the conclusion had been reached that the players need rest and that this justifies them sitting down certain nights. But based on the data we have obtained, there does not seem to be a correlation between taking breaks and avoiding injuries or fatigue.

«What is seen is that the players are less efficient on the second nights of a back to back» he continued. “But at the level of injuries and that type of thing, as we have been collecting more data we have realized that what we believed does not hold up.”

However, Dumars did not hide that the league’s desire for its stars to play as much as possible has to do with the imminent negotiation of television rights: «Partly yes. With this kind of thing there is never just one reason. All the possible causes, from the reaction of the fans or the players to that of the television stations, are part of it. It wouldn’t be honest to pretend that’s not the case.

«The ideal would be for all the players to want to play all 82 games. Obviously not everyone is going to play them all, but they should want to. That is the culture we are trying to establish »he concluded.
