The Las Vegas Aces Dominate the New York Liberty in Opening Game of WNBA Final

The Las Vegas Aces, defending champions, started the WNBA final with a home success against the New York Liberty (99-82) on Sunday, making the difference after the break with their offensive aggressiveness. This highly anticipated final between the two best teams in the league in the regular season got off to a flying start, with Liberty setting up its game in the second quarter to take the lead at the break (49-46).

New York was notably able to count on the spark brought by Frenchwoman Marine Johannès, author of 14 points in the first half (4 out of 5 from three points), including a few insane shots. But upon returning from the locker room, Las Vegas stepped on the accelerator, showing itself to be very aggressive, notably through leader Kelsey Plum and back Jackie Young (26 points each), pugnacious in transition.

The Aces also relied on their star, A’Ja Wilson (19 points), best player in the WNBA last year. The interior deployed its very effective two-point game, built on impeccable support and elegant offensive mechanics.

Stunned, New York sank, let down by its outside players, in particular Sabrina Ionescu (2 of 7 on shots) and Courtney Vandersloot (4 of 11). The second match of the best-of-five series will take place Wednesday evening (01:00 GMT Thursday) in Las Vegas.
