Tensions over Gaza Strip spill into football as players take sides and face backlash

The world of football is no stranger to the tense situation that is being experienced in the Gaza Strip. There have been many players who have very specifically positioned through their social networks regarding the conflict, generating enormous controversy and, sometimes, the response of other colleagues and even political institutions.

One of the clear examples is from Mazraoui. The Bayern player published a message of support and the wish for a “victory of Palestine” next to a flag of the territory. A text that ended up triggering a series of very forceful responses.

The deputy Johannes Steineiger claimed that Bayern will separate the player alluding to the past of the German team and to what was one of its presidents in two stages, Landauer, who was Jewish. “Kurt Landauer’s club, which was pejoratively called the Jews’ club by the Nazis, can’t ignore this. Furthermore, the state must use the responsibilities it has to expel him from Germany,” the deputy wrote on his social networks.

Dear Bayern officials, please fire him immediately.

Johannes Steineiger, German MP

The German newspaper ‘Bild’ accused him in one of its news items of being “supporter of terrorism”. Faced with this situation, the Moroccan was forced to clarify his messages on Twitter with another post.

“First of all, I would like to say that it is really disappointing to have to explain what I stand for. There is a situation where thousands of innocent people are being killed. My position is that I will work for peace and justice in this world. This means that I will always be against all types of terrorism, hatred and violence. And that’s something I will always support.”

Today is not about what I think or what you think, innocent people die every day because of this terrible conflict

Mazraoui, Bayern player

Precisely a teammate from his team, Peretz, took a position on his networks with the completely opposite message. The Israeli goalkeeper condemned Hamas’s attack on Israel on Instagram. “This is just a fraction of the atrocities and monstrosities committed by Hamas,” commented the Bayern man.

In France they accuse a Nice player of being “anti-Semitic”

A very similar case has been experienced in France with the Nice player Youcef Atal. The footballer published a harsh message against Jews on his networks that he later deleted and had to delete it and apologize condemning any form of violence.

However, reactions came quickly from the political sphere. The mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi, demanded an apology from the Algerian. “I hope Atal apologizes and denounces to Hamas terrorists. If it weren’t like that, I would no longer have a place in the club,” declared the politician.

Éric Ciotti, leader of the French republican party and born in Nice, also demanded measures.

“It is unbearable, unacceptable. For me this amounts to an apology for terrorism. I ask justice to act. We cannot allow this to happen. We cannot tolerate it, regardless of the person’s status. “It is not because he is a footballer that he should be protected,” the politician strongly denounced.
