Tennis star Rafael Nadal will apparently make his Grand Slam comeback at the Australian Open next January after a year out due to injury. At least that’s what tournament director Craig Tiley announced on Nine’s “The Today Show”.

“We can exclusively reveal here that Rafa is coming back,” said Tiley: “He has been away for most of the year and in discussions with him over the past few days he has confirmed that he will be back, which we are very happy about. That’s great.”

“I appreciate the vote of confidence from the Australian Open… I’m training every day and working hard to get back as soon as possible,” Nadal wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Long break due to hip injury

Nadal played his last match last January at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Since then he has had to take a break due to the hip injury. At the beginning of May, the 37-year-old Spaniard announced that he would not return to the tour until next year. 2024 will be the farewell year for the 22-time Grand Slam tournament champion. “He’s not just going to show up to play,” said Tiley, “he’s going to show up to win.”

Australia’s tennis star Nick Kyrgios, who was only able to play one match in Stuttgart this year due to injury, is also scheduled to play again at his home tournament starting on January 14, 2024. “We know Nick is in training so we expect him back,” said Tiley.
