After the cup success in the round of 16, the Telekom Baskets Bonn followed up against Ludwigsburg. The Rhinelanders celebrated their second win of the season in the league against the giants on Saturday – 91:86 (45:37).
In the round of 16 of the cup a week ago, the Bonn team still needed a comeback after being behind 34:46 at the break. This time things went a little differently in Ludwigsburg. The Baskets led 45:37 after 20 minutes and had to defend this lead in the final two quarters.
Ludwigsburg shortened to one point
Things didn’t go so well at first – when Desure Buie cut the lead to 48:49 with a three-pointer after the break, the lead threatened to change. But the runner-up from Bonn, which experienced a major personnel change in the summer, has gained stability under its new coach Roel Moors after two defeats at the start of the season.

Harald Frey countered Ludwigsburg’s three-pointer with a three-pointer for Bonn and kept the home team at bay. The Baskets even extended their lead until the last break and went into the last ten minutes with a lead of 75:63.
Frey secures victory from the free throw line
No decision had been made for the final round, in which the throwing efficiency decreased somewhat on both sides. Three minutes before the end, Ludwigsburg were only separated by three points from Bonn. In the end, it was not least Frey’s strong nerves at the free throw line that paved the way for Bonn to win – he converted two throws each to make it 84:79 and then 86:81 very confidently.
Frey also completed the decisive attack when the score was 86:83, although he initially lost the ball while dribbling. Ludwigsburg immediately gave up the advantage and Frey – now alone under the opponent’s basket – came back into the game – 88:83.
Just under six seconds before the end, the Giants managed a three-pointer to make it 86:88, but that was enough for Moors’ team. After a final timeout from Moors, Frey secured the win from the free throw line.
