The badminton mixed doubles team of Seo Seung-jae (Samsung Life Insurance) and Chae Yu-jeong (Incheon International Airport), ranked 5th in the world, won a bronze medal at the Asian Games.

The pair of Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong met China’s Zheng Si-wei and Huang Ya-chong (world No. 1) in the badminton mixed doubles semifinals of the ‘2022 Hangzhou Asian Games’ held at the Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China on the 6th (Korean time) with a set score of 1 to 2 (21- 13 15-21 16-21).

In the Asian Games, badminton awarded bronze medals to all semifinal losers without a separate 3rd and 4th place match, so Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong ended up taking bronze medals. Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, who reached the round of 16 at the ‘2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games’, ended this competition with bronze medals.

They had high expectations of winning the Asian Games by successively winning the World Championships in August and the China Open in September, but unfortunately they were unable to overcome Zheng Siwei and Huang Yachong. Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong lost 9 out of 9 against Zheng Si-wei and Huang Ya-chong, but won their first win in the World Championship finals last August and continued their winning streak in the quarterfinals of the China Open in September.

Chae Yu-jeong, who won the gold medal in the women’s team event, finished the competition with one gold medal and one bronze medal, and Seo Seung-jae finished the competition with two bronze medals (men’s team event).

In the first set, he succeeded in taking the lead with light movements. He took the lead by appropriately cutting off the opponent’s attack in front of the net and dropping the shuttlecock into an empty spot. On the other hand, the opponents showed a lack of coordination by delaying handling the ball.

However, the barrier to becoming number one in the world rankings was high. At 10-12, the opposing attack was declared out on video review and seemed to be chasing, but they gave up 4 consecutive points, widening the score gap and eventually giving up the 2nd set.

Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jeong were in a close battle until the middle of the third set, but after the interval, they made mistakes and ended up losing their game.
