Saudi Arabia: Karim Benzema scores then scores an own goal with Al-Ittihad

If Karim Benzema occupies the French media space this week mainly around political subjects, the former French international nonetheless remains an active footballer. Now a player for Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia) after his transfer last June, “KB9” returned to competition this Friday during a Saudi Pro League match, the Saudi national championship, pitting his team against that of Al-Taawun.

And despite his great experience, the 35-year-old striker experienced a first: after opening the scoring with a header into the area (22nd), Benzema scored a second goal four minutes later… but against his side . Coming to lend a hand to his defense on an opposing corner, the 2022 Ballon d’Or accidentally deflected the ball, once again with his head, into his own net. Never before has the man with five Champions Leagues with Real Madrid scored a goal against his team.

Pointed out by Gérald Darmanin, who attributes to him a “notorious link with the Muslim Brotherhood” and by Éric Zemmour, who accuses him of being “in direct link” with the death of Dominique Bernard, professor of literature shot dead in Arras on Friday last, Karim Benzema is at the heart of a controversy which pushes him to take several legal actions a few days after the publication of a message on his X account (formerly Twitter) where he addressed “all (his) prayers for the inhabitants of Gaza is once again the victim of these unjust bombings which spare no women or children.”
