Ronny Deila’s Attempt to Lure Aron Dönnum to Club Brugge from Standard Liège Unsuccessful

Ronny Deila made the much-discussed switch from Standard to Club Brugge in the summer. The Norwegian trainer had revived the Rouches last season, but saw insufficient prospects to continue making progress due to the financial limitations in Liège. He saw that in Bruges, where he had to bring stability again after a season with three trainers.

For this purpose, Deila received the necessary fresh blood in the summer, and did not hesitate to throw names from his period in Liège on the table. For example, Club brought in Philip Zinckernagel. The Dane was one of the standouts at Standard last season, but they could not afford to take him over permanently from Olympiacos.

Deila also wanted Dönnum at the Club

In addition, Steven Alzate’s name was also linked to Club several times. The Colombian midfielder was also a trendsetter at Standard last season and returned to his parent club Brighton in the summer. However, he did not get another chance there and eventually returned to Sclessin on a rental basis at the beginning of September.

It now appears that Deila wanted to take away a third important pawn from his former team. “Ronny Deila wanted to take me to Club Brugge,” Aron Dönnum now also explains Sudpresse. “But at that moment I chose to stay in Liège. I felt that Standard did not deserve that I would go to another Belgian club.”

Well done for Toulouse

Dönnum would eventually leave Standard, because he reacted when Toulouse came knocking. That came as a big surprise, because new coach Carl Hoefkens had appointed Dönnum captain and the Norwegian had extended his contract with Standard a few weeks earlier.

However, the Rouches also benefited from the transfer. With the transfer fee of 4.5 million euros that they collected, they could launch a final offensive on the mercato. Ultimately, Hayden, Alzate, Djenepo and Sowah came to Liège.
