Preparation Intensifies for Borussia’s Home Game Against 1. FC Heidenheim Amidst Player Availability Uncertainties

It was a tight match in the form of play that Borussia’s coach Gerardo Seoane had chosen for the first session in the short preparation for Saturday’s home game against 1. FC Heidenheim. First, his players played six-on-six on a narrower strip of play, then played ten-on-ten on a slightly larger field – including an additional passing station for both teams.

In addition, the playing fields were divided into different zones in which only certain groups of players were allowed to stay and play. How do I put pressure on the opponent and how do I free myself from the opponent’s pressure? The Borussia team had to face this task in the form of the game. On the narrow pitch and with a smaller number of players, two offensive passing stations were added as a reward once the attacking team secured the ball in the final third.

There were hardly any successful actions based on this pattern last Sunday in the 1:3 defeat in the derby against Cologne. The training session on Wednesday morning made it clear in which areas Seoane wants to see a significant improvement next Saturday. It is not yet completely clear which players he can then use.

19 field players were available to the coach on Wednesday for the approximately 75-minute session. Also there was Max Wöber, who had to be treated in the first half in Cologne after twisting his knee. The central defender was able to complete the entire training session. The situation is different for the man next to him in the back three, Ko Itakura: The Japanese had already missed the derby due to a bruised ankle and was now unable to take part in the opening training session of the new week. We’ll have to wait and see whether it’ll be enough until Saturday.

The prognosis is somewhat better for Joe Scally, who is expected to return to team training later this week. The full-back was still missing on Wednesday because he suffered a blow to the thigh in Cologne. But the horse kiss shouldn’t prevent him from being available again against Heidenheim. That remains to be seen with Tomas Cvancara. The striker had to miss the game on Wednesday with a flu-like infection and Jordan would be his replacement.

In addition to these short-term absences, Hannes Wolf, Yvandro Borges Sanches and Tony Jantschke were still missing – although at least the latter came to the training pitch for an individual session during the morning. Until the game on Saturday, Seoane now only has two – non-public – sessions left on the pitch to see who is ready for the task against the promoted team. In these few hours on the training pitch we will certainly work on the details in order to give a much better figure than last Sunday in the derby.
