Pallacanestro Reggiana: Fostering Youth Development On and Off the Court

Pallacanestro Reggiana, since the days of the Cantine Riunite, has been at the forefront in paying attention to the growth, not only in basketball, of the youth of the academy. In particular since it is directed by Andrea Menozzi (photo), technical historian and mentor of generations of basketball players. He was responsible for the development of the red and white “cantera” and the guesthouse. That is, the apartments where the babies live together (currently seven kids plus an adult, a coach from the club as “tutor”, divided into two apartments). Founded in the mid-90s, to welcome the first talents recruited outside Reggio, the guesthouse improved its organization and socio-educational function year after year. Almost all the children attend high schools in Reggio Emilia, the remainder implement distance learning with their country of origin. They have at their disposal a cook, a cleaner and a company employee who supervises their daily life. The company, in agreement with the families, monitors school performance and attendance and, for guests of the guesthouse, also participates in periodic interviews with the teachers. It rarely happens but those who are absent from lessons unjustifiably or do not behave appropriately suffer repercussions in basketball. The values of the “cantera” are then those that apply to the first team. Principles that have been strengthened with the arrival in red and white of the new general manager, Claudio Coldebella. The emblem is Langston Galloway who founded, in 2018 with his wife Sabrina, the “Langston Galloway Foundation”, a charity that supports and assists the children of Louisiana, the state where he is originally from, in various fields.
