Pallacanestro Cantù’s Dream of Returning to City Soil Takes a Step Forward with New Arena Construction

Since yesterday, the dream pursued for almost half a century in the City of Furniture is a little closer: to bring the glorious Pallacanestro Cantù back to play on city soil. The last time was at the time of the glorious Parini stadium, which still exists but too small to host top-flight matches, which is why in 1974 the Pianella was hastily built which guaranteed 4,000 seats, but was located in Cucciago, a few hundred meters beyond the city border. The solution was supposed to be temporary, but until its closure in 2016 it was the home of Pallacanestro Cantù which then ended up playing in Desio, but always with the desire to return to shooting basketball at home. Yesterday confirmation came from the provincial administration offices that it will be up to Cantù Next to try to accomplish the feat.

The Cantù company was the only one to have formalized an offer, participating in the European tender for the construction of the 50 million stadium. “As the group leader of the temporary association of companies to be formed, we submitted the offer for participation in the tender for the construction and future management of the new Cantù Arena within the time limits set by the tender – explains CEO Andrea Mauri -. We await completion of the controls and all the bureaucratic procedures necessary for the award”. If all the documents are in order by the end of the year, the construction site in Corso Europa could begin, where the Palababele was erected, the only work by star architect Gregotti that was built and demolished, and the PalaTurra went just beyond the foundations.
