OVERVIEW. Jérémy Doku and Loïs Openda celebrate, Axel Witsel curses at a disallowed goal and Mbappé and PSG stand back

Group E: Witsel curses at a disallowed goal, Feyenoord does a good job

Axel Witsel did not have a nice evening with Atlético when visiting Celtic. After three minutes he was surprised by a surprising one-two through the heart of the Spanish defense: Kyogo Furuhashi finished as dry as a bone. Atlético got back into the match via a penalty from Antoine Griezmann, but a few minutes later Luis Palma scored the ball for Celtic from an acute angle.

Just before half time, Witsel seemed to get his point, but his goal was disallowed for offside. At the start of the second half it was a prize: Alvaro Morata headed home after a cross from Marcos Llorente, but Atlético did not hit anything else. After Rodrigo De Paul was sent off, it was even Celtic who came out fierce in the end. With the point, Atlético climbs to second place, Celtic is last with one in nine.

Earlier in the evening, Feyenoord did a great job in the same group by beating Lazio 3-1. Santiago Giménez scored twice, Ramiz Zerrouki also contributed. Only in the final phase were Lazio able to mitigate through a penalty from Pedro. Both Bart Nieuwkoop (ex-Union) and Calvin Stengs (ex-Antwerp) were in the starting line-up for the Feyenoord team, the latter providing the assist for the 2-0. Thanks to the victory, Feyenoord is now alone at the top of group E. Lazio is third with four points and must hope that they can beat the Rotterdam team in the return match to regain second place.

Group G: Haaland gives City the win, Openda to the party

Jérémy Doku flashed again for Manchester City when visiting Young Boys Bern, but was unhappy. First he missed a big chance because he slid away on the artificial grass field while kicking and kicked against his own supporting leg, then Young Boys goalkeeper Racciopi floated his curl to the far corner of the goal. Teammate Manuel Akanji managed to demolish the Swiss wall after the break, but just as quickly the score was 1-1. Meschack Elia finished with a wonderful lob. However, Erling Haaland put things in order from the spot with the 1-2 and rounded it off in the final phase with the 1-3.

Loïs Openda won at home against Red Star Belgrade with RB Leipzig. David Raum kicked the ball early through the goalkeeper’s legs. Xavi Simons, who also provided the assist for the 1-0, then put the 2-0 on the board with a wonderful long shot. Marko Stamenic scored against, but with Dani Olmo’s 3-1 the match was settled. Openda was allowed to take a free kick – won with a game of leaf, rock, scissors with a teammate – but it was just saved by the Serbian goalkeeper.

Group F: PSG beats Milan, Dortmund does well when visiting Newcastle

PSG took the lead against Milan thanks to a great action by Kylian Mbappé, who was able to score in the short corner after a dribble from 17-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery. Immediately after half time it was already 2-0: Randal Kolo Muani was in the right place to slide in a rebound. Right at the end, Lee Kang-in put the 3-0 final score on the board. PSG is at the top of the group with six out of nine, Milan is last with two out of nine.

The match between Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund went back and forth wonderfully quickly with great opportunities for both teams to take the lead. But in the end it was the Germans who found the hole. Felix Nmecha – brother of ex-Anderlecht player Lukas – neatly put the ball in the corner. Sandro Tonali was allowed to come on at Newcastle. The Italian midfielder faces a heavy suspension for illegal gambling on football matches. With the victory, Dortmund climbs to second place in the group: they now have four out of nine, just like Newcastle.

Group H: Barcelona again thanks youth product against Shakhtar

Last weekend we were still talking about Marc Guiu, the 17-year-old debutant who immediately scored the winning goal against Athletic de Bilbao after 23 seconds. But against Shakhtar Donetsk it was the turn of Fermín López, a 20-year-old attacking midfielder. Played for the A team seven times before – we looked it up.

Against Shakhtar, he first avoided the offside trap on a fine pass from Ilkay Gundogan and rammed into the intersection. Ferran Torres kicked in the rebound for the 1-0. A few minutes later, Fermín was there again: he broke free and hit the post again – this time the ball bounced straight in. Barcelona’s Twitter account talked about a shot of 230 (!) kilometers per hour.

After rest, his crazy evening continued as usual. First he placed a pass from just inside the box on the post – the third time on target for him. And then he headed nicely into the goal from across the corner, but his goal was disallowed for offside. In between, the Ukrainian talent Georgiy Sudakov had scored the tying goal after a sharp counter-punch. As a result, it became a pressing final phase in which Barcelona increasingly retreated and Shakhtar had a few more chances to equalize, but the score remained 2-1. As a result, Barcelona leads Antwerp’s group H with 9 out of 9, Shakhtar is third with 3 out of 9.

Celtic-Atlético Madrid 2-2

  1. Bonucci wanted to stay in Italy and was linked with both Lazio and Fiorentina, but a move never materialised, and he ultimately penned a one-year deal with Union Berlin. He’s seen 504 minutes of action across six games for the club since his arrival on transfer deadline day.
