Ombudsman’s Office asks to clarify the effects of expired tear gas

This October 27, 2023, the Ombudsman’s Office, through official letter No. 7358c-2023, has requested, within a period of no more than five business days, the National Police to respond to the effects that the tear gas used after of the expiration date, given that in the recent social protests protesters and personnel of this entity evidenced said dispersers.

Likewise, the letter asks the police entity to clarify what controls the institution maintains in relation to the non-lethal weapons they handle to safeguard people’s lives when they are used.

The National Human Rights Institution (INDH) also carries out negotiations with specialized private entities to have other opinions on the possible consequences of the use of tear gas dispersers with expired dates.

In addition, it urges some organization or companies that can collaborate in carrying out the corresponding studies to clarify the possible effects on people.
