Olympic Gold Medalist Clarisse Agbégnénou Faces Controversy Over Unsanitary Apartment Rental

Multi-medalist judoka Clarisse Agbégnénou would rent an apartment bordering on unsanitary conditions to a mother in Maisons-Alfort in Val-de-Marne.

Mold on the ceiling, absence of VMC, humidity level of 78.8% in the air. This accommodation, described as “indecent” and bordering on unsanitary is that of a mother and her two daughters, aged six and three. Since 2015, they have lived in this 57 square meter apartment, in Maisons-Alfort, in Val- de-Marne, for a monthly rent of 1070 euros.

Its owner is far from being unknown to the public: it is Clarisse Agbégnénou, the star judokate who won gold at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Information revealed by journalist Lina Rhrissi, who investigated the case for the Streetpress media.

According to the journalist, the tenant, a childhood friend of the 33-year-old judokate, has been asking since May 2022 for the apartment to be brought up to standard, following water damage. Indeed, this apartment would contain a humidity level of 78.8%, “while healthy air is between 40 and 60% humidity“, specifies the article.

And “appointed expert” then notices that the apartment is not Standards“. A diagnosis confirmed by “an inspector from the Maisons-Alfort hygiene and sanitation department“. She reports the presence of “mold and the lack of three ventilations in the bathroom and toilet. She concludes in the official document that for housing to be decent, the necessary ventilation must be added. More than a year later, nothing has been done“, reports the Streetpress investigation.

Val-de-Marne social assistance goes so far as to alert the family’s situation in these terms: “The living conditions in this accommodation are complex and endanger the family.”

And “breach of departmental health regulations“which the high-level sportswoman would ignore, while the two little girls present “respiratory illnesses which could be caused by excessively high humidity in the home where they grew up“, details Streetpress.

While the tenant denounces the inaction of Clarisse Agbégnénou, the latter blames her for unpaid rent. According to Streetpress, “Clarisse Agbégnénou [aurait même] sent on July 26, 2023 an order to pay with a view to having his tenant evicted“.

The judokate’s family assures that she is “of good will” and told the journalist that: “We have been ready to begin the work for months, the solutions are there and are just waiting for the green light from [la locataire]but she decided to complain.”

The judokate is now demanding more than 5,000 euros from her tenant to repay her four months of unpaid debts. A situation which would in truth arise from a “agreement by email“between the two parties,”while waiting for the work to be done“. The mother is now looking to leave this accommodation. She is waiting for social housing.
