Thomas Müller and the national team will face the USA on Saturday. Before the debut of national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the world champion from FC Bayern makes a special suggestion. And is extremely amazed at a newcomer to the selection.

Thomas Müller is currently particularly amazed at a newcomer to the national soccer team. Chris Führich from VfB Stuttgart is so self-confident in training during the trip to the USA that FC Bayern’s experienced offensive star is also impressed. “I was surprised that a player like Chris Führich hasn’t made the leap into the limelight more quickly,” said Müller in Foxborough near Boston and didn’t mean that as criticism.

On the contrary. “I have to ask him how his career has been so far, because a player with so much wit and agility, with good shooting technique, can only show his potential regularly at Stuttgart in his mid-20s,” Müller explained his observation.

Führich could make his debut on Saturday

The 25-year-old Führich has impressed with very strong performances for the Bundesliga’s surprise team this season and was rewarded by new national coach Julian Nagelsmann with his first nomination for the A team. An international debut against the USA on Saturday (9 p.m./RTL) or on Wednesday against Mexico (2 a.m.) is quite likely.

Nagelsmann already emphasized that Führich currently has exceptionally good “momentum”. The technically adept offensive player moved from SC Paderborn to VfB Stuttgart in 2021. “I didn’t plan that much, I didn’t expect that much, I was just looking forward to being here,” said Führich after the first days of training with the national team.

Like Führich, Müller is in a good mood. And the new national coach would also take on a completely new role. “I’m ready for any shameful act,” joked the world champion before Nagelsmann’s debut against the USA. “If I’m supposed to play left-back, I’ll play left-back.” But that, he added with a smile, “wouldn’t be a good idea. But Julian knows me, my strengths and weaknesses – and accordingly there are few question marks. I can play any position on the offensive.” Müller denied that there had been animosity between him and Nagelsmann since their time together at FC Bayern. “My relationship with Julian has always been and is good.”

The 34-year-old is particularly pleased about the return of defender Mats Hummels to the national team. Müller said about his friend from Borussia Dortmund: “We are both flying in parallel. He went through it too: From not needing to be invited anymore to never inviting them again to oh, yes, we absolutely need them. And two weeks later: Yes, we have to do without the old players anyway, we need a change.
